Curiosity Show was a 30-minute science program featuring Dr Rob Morrison and Dr Deane Hutton. It was made in Adelaide, South Australia and screened nationally in Australasia as well as in Europe and Asia. Production and TV broadcast ran from 1972 until 1990, after which it continued for a while on cable TV.
Although the original broadcasts were in English, especially suitable for Australian and New Zealand audiences, the program was dubbed into German and revoiced with German actors and, in that form, was widely broadcast throughout Europe.
Deane and Rob intentionally used everyday items around the house (like old rusty cans, scrap cardboard, aluminium foil, etc.) so that people could repeat the demonstrations with materials they had to hand without the need to purchase materials that could be expensive or hard to get. This made the program very successful in regional and remote areas where shopping is difficult.
Curiosity Show won many national TV awards and In 1984 it won the Prix Jeunesse International, the world’s top award for TV programs for young people.
Since 2013, Rob and Deane have been steadily uploading segments from various episodes at www.youtube.com/curiosityshow and in 2019 the Channel was awarded YouTube’s Silver Creator’s award. The online Curiosity Show currently has more than 120,000 subscribers, with some segments having several million views.
Curiosity Show has also produced three DVDs:
Deane and Rob’s Curiosity Show Collection – 20 things to make and do from the Curiosity Show;
Curiosity Show in action and
Curiosity Show and STEM.
Deane and Rob also published 11 books based on Curiosity Show activities, while Rob Morrison’s memoir Curious Recollections – life in the Curiosity Show, published by Wakefield Press in 2019, details some of the exploits and humorous incidents that occurred during Curiosity Show’s long production run.
