The original Charmed show had quite a few memorable love stories. Prue and Andy. Phoebe and Cole. Paige and Kyle. However, the love story between Charmed One, Piper Halliwell, and her Whitelighter, Leo Wyatt, was the best by a wide margin. While their love was originally the result of a forbidden relationship, the pair survive all the troubles their magical lives throw at them, becoming one of the few examples on the show where love truly does conquer all.
Here are a few times Piper and Leo were the embodiment of complete ‘Relationship Goals’.
LEO ONLY HAS EYES FOR PIPER
When Leo first enters the Charmed Ones’ lives posing as a handy-man, Piper and her younger sister Phoebe find themselves competing for his affections. However, from Leo’s perspective, there is never any real competition between the two. Despite Phoebe’s best efforts, Leo is only ever interested in Piper.
LOVE HEALS
Piper and Leo’s relationship runs into trouble when she finds out that Leo is a Whitelighter and their relationship is forbidden. Unfortunately, this discovery occurs after Leo has been shot by a Darklighter’s arrow, and is slowly dying from its poison. A Whitelighter can only heal others, not themselves, so Piper casts a spell to switch their powers. Piper initially struggles to make Leo’s ability work for her, but once she acknowledges that she loves Leo, the powers are activated. Piper heals Leo, effectively bringing him back from the brink of death with her love.
SURVIVING THE WEDDING
After surviving a ‘trial period’ placed on their relationship by Leo’s bosses – The Elders – they finally allow Piper and Leo to marry. Unfortunately, their special day doesn’t go as planned, with a power outage and Prue almost being wrongfully arrested for murder in the middle of the ceremony. However, Leo is determined to marry Piper. The couple’s friends and family pull together to help them fix everything, and they are finally married just before midnight. While the wedding wasn’t exactly what they’d planned, everything was perfect in the end.
NAMED AFTER HIS FATHER
In season four of Charmed, Piper and Leo decide to start a family. Although scarring caused by demon battle injuries means Piper initially struggles to conceive, it’s revealed she is pregnant in the season finale, and she gives birth to a son during season five. It is quickly decided that the baby’s surname should be Halliwell, due to the respect the name commands among the magical community, but they struggle to decide on a first name. After trying out a few ‘P’ names, Piper ultimately decides to buck tradition, naming her son Wyatt – Leo’s surname – to honour his father.
SUCCESSFUL CO-PARENTING
Though they never stop loving one another, Piper and Leo are forced to break-up when Leo becomes an Elder. The situation is difficult for both of them, but they manage to remain mostly civil for Wyatt’s sake. Leo remains an involved parent as much as his demanding new job allows, often arranging for Wyatt’s care at magic school when Piper is busy dealing with the demon of the week.
LEO FALLS (FROM GRACE) FOR PIPER
After the defeat of the Avatars, the Elders devise a test for the troubled Leo to prove once and for all whether his destiny lies with The Elders or with Piper. He is dropped off in a remote location, stripped of his memories and his powers, with the idea being that fate will lead him to where he truly belongs. One Elder, Odin, interferes with the test, steering Leo away from Piper. However, fate has other ideas, when Piper, in a coma after a demon attack, manages to call out psychically to Leo, prompting him to immediately remember his wife. Leo then chooses to fall from Grace, giving up God-like power in favour of being with Piper.
HEADS OF THE HALLIWELL FAMILY
In the final episode of Charmed, before Piper travels back in time to change the outcome of the battle with the Ultimate Power and reverse the deaths of Phoebe and Paige, she and Leo get a brief glimpse of the future. They meet their elderly future selves, still happily married. The elderly Piper and Leo are seen again in a flash-forward at the end of the episode, with a house full of grandchildren.
They have successfully accomplished what all couples want: To live happily ever after with the one they love. There’s no greater ‘Relationship Goal’ than that.
