Arise riders of Rohan! It may have been two decades since Supa-Star guest Miranda Otto valiantly rode into battle as Éowyn, the fearless shield maiden of Rohan, but her time in Middle-earth is not yet done.
Returning as the narrator for this year’s The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Otto’s Éowyn is set to reveal a much older tale of heroics and adventure in the land of the Riddermark. Directed by award-winning anime filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and produced by original Lord of the Rings screenwriter Philippa Boyens, this latest animation film takes place 183 years before Fellowship of the Ring and follows the house of the legendary Helm Hammerhand (Succession’s Brian Cox).
To whet viewers’ appetites for what promises to be a truly epic return to Middle-earth, Warner Bros. recently released their first official trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. You can check it out below:
Taking the vast fantasy world first envisioned by J.R.R. Tolkien and reimagining in classic anime style, this first glimpse at War of the Rohirrim reveals a new Middle-earth story that is every bit as awe-inspiring as the Peter Jackson films it directly ties into.
The Biggest War of the Rohirrim Trailer Reveals
Those familiar with The Lord of the Rings will no doubt already recognise the name Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan whose name was given to the ancient stronghold in which King Théoden repelled Saruman’s forces in The Two Towers. Proving himself every bit the mighty ruler of legend, Cox’s booming vocals are an ideal pick for such a key figure in Tolkien’s expansive lore.
However, just as Otto’s Éowyn proved, heroism and the fighting spirit of the Riddermark is not just reserved for the men of Rohan. This new trailer reveals that Helm’s daughter, Héra (Gaia Wise), possesses the same strength of heart and will that her descendant would later display on Pelennor Fields. Following a revenge attack by the ambitious Dunlending lord, Wulf (Luke Pasqualino), the young Héra summons the will to lead her people in a desperate stand for the own survival.
With the involvement of previous Lord of the Rings filmmakers, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, combined with the input of Alan Lee, Richard Taylor, and esteemed Tolkien illustrator John Howe, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is set to delight even the most fastidious Tolkien fan. Arriving in cinemas nationwide on December 13, 2024, War of the Rohirrim will have you ready to Ride for Ruin and the Red Dawn!
