Fans of Supa-Star Bryce Papenbrook were delighted with the return of Attack on Titan for a third season, and the voice of Eren Jaeger himself shares in the excitement.
“I was actually a fan of the show when it was first aired in Japan, and it had this way of ending episodes that makes you go, ‘Ahh okay, I just wanna watch another one,’” he explains.
“And now that there are episodes coming out in Japan every week and episodes coming out in English every week it does the same thing, even through the second part of season three, it’s really kept me on my toes.”
It’s unsurprising that fans and voice actors alike are obsessed with Attack on Titan. With its breathtaking animation style, stellar soundtrack and characters that are deep and interesting, it’s a show that pulls you in and keeps you involved with every twist and revelation.
“[Attack on Titan] really reminds me of Lost – they give you an answer that just creates two more questions so you’re even more confused than you were the episode before… and I feel like Attack on Titan does that really well over and over.”
As for what the future holds for Attack on Titan and what direction the showrunners will take it, Papenbrook’s guess is as good as ours.
“It’s really hard to say, I’m really bad at guessing what’s gonna happen, even back to the first season all the twists really got me, so it’s really hard to say what’s gonna happen.”
Of course, Attack on Titan isn’t the only thing Papenbrook is famous for. His iconic voice can be heard in many popular video games, anime and television shows.
The impressive list including the roles of Kirito in seasons one and two of Sword Art Online, Adrien aka Chat Noir in Miraculous Ladybug, Rin Okumura in Blue Exorcist, Meliodas, Zeldris and Love Helm in The Seven Deadly Sins, Black Ranger in the Power Rangers Megaforce Game, Lest in Rune Factory 4, Henry in Fire Emblem Awakening, and so many more.
Fans will be glad to hear that Papenbrook shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon with plenty more projects on the way.
“I’m currently recording a show called Sword Art Online: Alicization and its the third season of Sword Art Online. In my opinion, it’s one of the best arcs of the show, it’s super exciting. I’m also recording a lot of third seasons right now, [including] the third season of a show called Miraculous Ladybug.”
“There’s also a slew of other things that I’m involved with right now and it’s a really exciting time for me. They’ve just announced that I’m now a part of the Sonic Universe; I play Silver the Hedgehog in Team Sonic Racing.”
Papenbrook credits all his success to his father, Bob Papenbrook, his inspiration for voice acting. Bob was a legendary voice actor with a stack of roles under his belt, including Biscoe and Hussan in Gungrave, Tanaka, Alexander Fujiyama, Ryosuke Takahashi and Yoichi Mizuki in Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, Dread in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and numerous characters in the Power Rangers franchise. It was during one of his father’s recording sessions for Power Rangers that a young Papenbrook got his first taste of voice acting.
“And at the end of one of his sessions they needed a kid’s voice and my dad went, ‘He’s a kid, throw him in the booth!’ and I got thrown in there,” he explains. “And it’s really cool that I get the opportunity to carry on the torch. He’s really been my inspiration and drive to pursue voice acting the way that I have.”
Bryce Papenbrook will appear at Supanova Comic Con & Gaming Sydney (21–23 June) and Perth (29-30 June).
