Chris Ryall is the co-founder of Syzygy Publishing, a graphic-novel imprint launched in early 2022 via Image Comics. In its first year Syzygy, Ryall and his partner Ashley Wood published titles including Joe Hill’s Rain, All Against All, Hitomi, Ryall and Wood’s Zombies vs Robots Classic, Wood’s 7174. Their most recent release is a split-book called Tales of Syzpense featuring characters created by Wood and Ryall.
Prior, he spent 17 years at IDW Publishing as the company’s Editor-in-Chief, Chief Creative Officer, Publisher, and President. There, he managed the publishing line and brought in licensed properties such as Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Godzilla, Star Trek, classic Disney titles, Star Wars for all-ages readers, and many others; additionally, he developed and edited many original titles for IDW, most successfully the Eisner-winning Locke & Key, of which he is also an Executive Producer on Netflix’s Locke & Key streaming series.
As a writer/editor, he has adapted Shawn of the Dead, Transformers, Land of the Dead, and Phoenix Without Ashes to graphic-novel form; adapted stories by and developed projects with Stephen King, Clive Barker, Anne Rice, Harlan Ellison, Richard Matheson, Joe R. Lansdale, Cory Doctorow, Douglas Adams, and many other authors. Ryall has edited graphic-novel and prose anthologies, and is the writer/co-creator of Zombies vs Robots ( acquired by Sony Pictures in 2010); Groom Lake, The Colonized, and The Hollows, and is co-writer of the non-fiction Comic Books 101.
In addition to Syzygy Publishing, he is currently a consultant/advisor to Popularium; exec producer on BBC Studios’ in-development Eve Stranger; co-creator/co-EP of a scripted series in development at Paramount Pictures; and recently completed a year-long period as programming and exhibits consultant with San Diego’s new Comic-Con Museum.
