Newstime: The Stories You Might Have Missed This Week

From film to TV, anime to comics and everything in between, here’s what you might have missed in pop culture news this week.

TV

FX has released a trailer and poster (above) for the third and final season of their X-Men adjacent TV series Legion, this time teasing the appearance of Professor Charles Xavier.

Also in news from FX, its adaptation of Taika Waititi’s vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows has officially been renewed for a second season.

Wax on, wax off. Another renewal is also on the cards for YouTube Original’s Kobra Kai, a continuation of the original Karate Kid. Fresh off a successful season two, which saw original cast member Martin Kove (John Kreese) join William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence) and Ralph Macchio (Daniel LaRusso), showrunner Jon Hurwitz has celebrated via Twitter.

Over to Netflix, where Marvel shows including Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and The Punisher have wrapped up, the streaming platform still has the third season of Jessica Jones to release. A recent poster has been revealed, promising the wait will not be too much longer.

Whoops! Someone in Westeros messed up when eagle-eyed fans spotted a Starbucks coffee cup accidentally featured in a scene of this week’s episode of Game of Thrones. HBO has responded to the mistake with good humour via the tweet below:

Despite the Donald Glover-led Deadpool cartoon getting the chop last year before it had even aired, the character’s creator, Rob Liefeld, has hinted that a Deadpool cartoon series is indeed still in the works, and may be closer than expected.

HBO has finally dropped the first teaser trailer for its upcoming Watchmen series, starring Regina King, Jeremy Irons and Don Johnson. The show is set to premiere later this year.

FILM

Big news from Disney (and their newly acquired Fox Studios), who have just announced a massive film release schedule of over 63 films leading up to 2027. Notable titles in the line-up are a final release date for New Mutants on April 3, 2020, eleven new Marvel movies, the four Avatar sequels, Indiana Jones 5, and a whole new Star Wars trilogy beginning in 2022. Conspicuous by its absence is the on-again-off-again Gambit film starring Channing Tatum, but this is probably not unexpected, as Marvel Studios work out a way to bring the X-Men back into the MCU after the release of New Mutants.

In other news from the MCU, Sony and Marvel Studios have released a new trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home, featuring some big Endgame spoilers. If you haven’t seen Endgame yet, you may want to give this one a miss until you do.

 

And leading into the next generation of Marvel films, The Eternals may be hosting Game of Thrones star Richard Madden, who is currently in talks to portray Ikaris.

In news a little closer to home, Aussie filmmaker Abe Forsythe is looking to team up again with actress Lupita Nyong’o (Us, Star Wars, Black Panther) for a sci-fi comedy titled Miss Universe. Forsythe and Nyong’o’s first collaboration, the zombie comedy Little Monsters, debuted at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year with a broader theatrical release date yet to be confirmed.

Charlie’s Angels and Terminator: Salvation director McG’s latest sci-fi adventure, Rim of the World, is scheduled to drop on Netflix at the end of the month. The film follows four teenage misfits who set out to save the world following an alien invasion.

Stephen King has given It: Chapter 2 his official thumbs up.

 

In other horror news, The Dark Knight screenwriter David S. Goyer is officially on board to write the script for the Hellraiser reboot being put together by Spyglass Media Group.

ANIME

The biggest and best from the anime world this week is that legendary director Masaaki Yuasa is finally making another TV anime! With classics like Kaiba, Ping-Pong the Animation, Devilman Crybaby, and The Tatami Galaxy under his belt, the new show, an adaptation of the manga Hands Off My Eizouken, promises many great things. The manga is about three high school girls who take on the difficult task of making their own anime series. No release date has been confirmed as of yet.

Kōjirō Taniguchi, the producer of the new Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection film, has confirmed that the new movie is actually ‘phase one’ in a ten-year plan for more Code Geass content. The Code Geass franchise has been dormant for over a decade now, and fans are eager to see how this next instalment follows on from the series’ original conclusion. To celebrate the film’s release in Australian cinemas on May 16, Supanova has teamed up with Madman to giveaway five in-season Double Passes, with entries closing 12pm AEST Monday, 13 May.

COMICS

In honour of the legendary Stan Lee, Onyx Coffee Labs and The Stan Lee Foundation have teamed up to release a limited edition coffee blend, inspired by the man himself. All sales will go toward the Stan Lee Foundation which assists child literacy and fosters art appreciation.

In other Marvel news, long-time DC artist Pat Gleason has just signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Comics, which will start in July with an Amazing Spider-Man short story.

Red Hood is finally getting his own in a variant cover from Midtown Comics. The giant US-based comic shop has released an exclusive cover for issue #2 of the DCeased event, showing Jason Todd’s Red Hood savagely beating the Joker with a crowbar. Talented artist InHyuk Lee, provides the striking scene.

And finally, a trailer for the new comic series Savage Avengers has been released, teasing an epic story and team up.
