April Supa-Stars Troy Baker and Nolan North are both known for lending their voices to countless animated characters, but the iconic duo has also made quite an impact with their YouTube show, Retro Replay.
UPDATE: 22 March – Troy and Nolan will record an episode of Retro Reply LIVE! at Supanova. Tickets are on sale now!
The project, which is currently in its second season, sees them share their wit and wisdom with the world and explain the history behind their favourite retro games.
YouTube has quickly become the home of gaming reviews and playthroughs, so it’s no surprise that Baker and North have found a place for their show there and have an ever-growing number of subscribers.
Why is the world so fascinated with watching people play video games? Playthroughs allow viewers to see a game’s content before playing it themselves, while also providing tips and tricks, and entertainment. In the case of Retro Replay, there is also the nostalgia factor that comes with seeing a game from your childhood or another era.
Baker and North’s genuine love for gaming is reflected in their appreciation of these classic games and their desire to keep certain releases in the spotlight. It’s also interesting to note that a lot of classic games don’t have voice actors, so the Retro Replay hosts read the dialogue in quirky voices, giving their audience insight into what the characters might sound like if the games were released in today’s day and age.
The series has found the perfect balance of nostalgia, comedy and gaming. When watching Retro Replay expect lots of harmonised high-pitched singing, hilarious anecdotes and, of course, some accents and sound effects.
Each episode is filled with charm distinct to Baker and North, as well as many improvised scenes between characters that will leave you in stitches. And, if you weren’t already sold, perhaps spot-on Christopher Walken and Jeff Goldblum impressions might seal the deal, as seen in the below episode.
The success of Retro Replay has allowed Baker and North to take their show on live tours and create merchandise, as well as hold multiple live streams and a live screening of the season release. The show also takes fans into consideration as YouTube has a live chat feature which allows fans to interact with Baker and North and discuss past episodes before the next episode is uploaded.
Season two of the show has only just begun so you still have time to catch up on the show before diving straight into the current season. The first season focuses on popular titles such as Space Invaders, Metroid, Altered Beast and Prince of Persia, so season two is bound to feature some classic games as suggested by the show’s viewers in the YouTube comments.
If you are a fan of either Baker and/or North’s voice acting work and need a new show to check out, Retro Replay is definitely the right place for you.
Troy Baker and Nolan North will appear at Supanova Comic Con & Gaming Melbourne (6-7 April) and Gold Coast (13-14 April).
