Manners maketh man, Supa-Fans! It’s hard to believe that it has now been over six years since audiences last saw Taron Egerton’s streetwise misfit-turned-superspy Gary “Eggsy” Unwin don his impeccably tailored suit and save the world from threats that will forever remain unknown to the general populace.
Based on the comic books by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, 2014’s Kingsman: The Secret Service and 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle would serve to introduce moviegoers to a charming new secret agent more than capable of standing shoulder to shoulder with the genre’s greatest. Quick-witted and blessed with a mischievous sense of adventure, Egerton’s tenure in the first two Kingsman movies would harken back to the grand heyday of spy films, reinjecting a sense of fun and frivolity largely forgotten by the other major franchises.
However, after years of delays and little concrete news of which to speak, movement on the long-anticipated next Kingsman film is finally underway with filming expected to begin in 2024. Moreover, franchise director Matthew Vaughn also has additional plans to return to the era of his 2021 prequel, The King’s Man, and will seek to further flesh out the secretive origins of the Kingsman Secret Intelligence Service.
With this in mind, strap on your Oxfords (not Brogues!) and let’s take a look at what we can expect from Vaughn’s highly anticipated return to the Kingsman franchise.
Kingsman: The Blue Blood
Originally planned prior to the release of 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle, the third Kingsman movie set in the modern era has been officially dubbed Kingsman: The Blue Blood and is intended to serve as the final outing for both Egerton’s Eggsy and Colin Firth’s Harry Hart. Constantly pushed back due to several factors, including 20th Century Fox’s 2019 merger with Disney and the widespread impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, good news finally arrived at this year’s New York Comic-Con when Vaughn confirmed filming on the third movie was officially getting underway in 2024.
At this stage, the exact story for the movie remains a closely guarded secret, though Vaughn has teased something potentially devastating ahead for Eggsy or his beloved Kingsman agency. While speaking with Screen Rant, Vaughn was asked about his return to the characters, and how Eggsy has managed to evolve from a rebellious street kid into a man with purpose. Ominously, Vaughn responded, “Imagine if that purpose disappears, is all I’ll say.”
Exactly what Vaughn’s words mean for Egerton’s hero is open to debate, however, it seems unlikely that the Kingsman agency would face potential destruction after it was already decimated during the events of 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Instead, Eggsy may potentially find himself facing a far more personal threat, one directed toward his new wife, Princess Tilde (Hanna Alström). Even the film’s title, The Blue Blood hints at a threat from within the aristocracy which Eggsy himself joined through his marriage to Tilde at the end of The Golden Circle.
While no official release date has been set for Kingsman: The Blue Blood, next year’s production start date potentially bodes well for a possible 2025 release.
The King’s Man: The Traitor King
Thankfully, the news to come out of this year’s New York Comic-Con did not end with Kingsman: The Blue Blood. Instead, Vaughn was also able to tease his potential return to the early days of the Kingsman agency via a follow-up to 2021’s The King’s Man.
A surprising mid-credit scene hinted that its sequel would potentially explore the lead-up to World War II. During his appearance, Vaughn indeed confirmed this to be the case. Revealing its title as The Traitor King, Vaughn’s intended follow-up will most likely focus on the short-lived reign of King Edward VIII.
While Vaughn has already written the story for The Traitor King, there is currently no confirmation regarding a possible production start date, and the director is still unsure whether it will take the form of a movie or even a possible television series.
